Meet Luiz Amorim, a Mining consultant with over 10 years of experience who has recently joined our consulting team in Perth. Luiz is a Mining Engineer who graduated in 2012 and since then he has worked in strategic and long-term planning for open-pit and underground mines across variety of commodities including Iron Ore, Copper, Gold and Aluminium. As an expert user of Datamine solutions including Minemax Scheduler, Studio NPVS and Studio OP, Luiz will be helping our clients to achieve their mine planning objectives.
Get to know Luiz a little better through the interview below:
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a mining engineer with over 10 years’ experience in the industry. Since I graduated in 2012 in Brazil, I’ve worked most of my career in strategic and long-term planning for Vale’s mines. I was involved in ground control and preservation of natural underground caves in iron ore, and I have also worked with commodities such as Copper, Gold and Aluminium. Between 2020-2021, I was part of the Datamine’s open pit team in the Brazil office, so I am not completely new to Datamine either.
Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on and how you help them improve?
At Datamine, we have the opportunity to work with different types of commodities and different mining methods for various clients so our consultancy work is very diverse. Sometimes clients have trouble to articulate their problems and need a little help to clarify their objectives. Another time one solution made for one customer can help meet the needs for another client. Understanding the problem is key to finding the right solution for our clients.
What inspired your career in this industry?
Since I was a little boy, I accompanied my father, who was also a mining engineer, to the mines in my hometown, so he was a great inspiration to pursue this career.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?
It’s the daily challenges that we encounter on a regular basis. I like finding innovative solutions that have not been considered by our clients before contracting our services. I find it very rewarding to utilize Datamine’s software and all its functionalities to the fullest so we can achieve the maximum business value for our client’s operations.
What are your best memories from your career?
I find it priceless to connect with colleagues and clients all around the world and to make sincere
friendships that span time and continents.
What’s a fun fact about you?
In 2021 I had the opportunity to participate in a soccer game between the members of my football team (Atlético Mineiro) at an official stadium in my hometown Belo Horizonte. I scored a goal, we won the game 2-1 and I was voted the best player of the match.
